Timor-Leste conference discussing New Silk Road initiative

The Chinese New Silk Road initiative is being discussed in a two-day international conference which began today in Timor-Leste, the government there says.

The Timor-Leste government says in a written announcement that on the opening day Portuguese academic Heitor Barras Romana gave a presentation on the geopolitics of the sea.

The announcement says World Maritime University Vice-president (International) Shuo Ma will deliver tomorrow a lecture on the importance of deep-water ports in the New Silk Road project.

The conference is being put on by the Timor-Leste National Defence Institute, which trains officers for the Timor-Leste police and armed forces, the National Defence Institute website says.
