Chinese contractor to build public housing in Mozambique

The government of Mozambique has given CITIC Construction Co. Ltd of China the contract to build public housing containing 35,000 homes in four provinces of the country over five years, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes Mozambican Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources João Machatine as telling a conference in Maputo that CITIC Construction will build 15,000 dwellings in the south of the country, 10,000 in the centre and 10,000 in the north, at a cost of between US$30,000 and US$40,000 each.

The report quotes a Chinese diplomat in Maputo, Liu Xiaoguang, as telling the conference that associated roads, street lighting, power lines, water pipes, sewers and other infrastructure will be built.

The Chinese government supports the efforts of suitably qualified Chinese companies to help the Mozambican government improve infrastructure and so raise standards of living, Xinhua quotes Mr Liu as saying.
