Port of Santos, state of São Paulo to open Shanghai office

The operator of the Brazilian port of Santos, Codesp, and the Brazilian state of São Paulo will open an office in Shanghai in November, O Globo reports.

The Brazilian newspaper quotes Codesp President Casemiro Tércio de Carvalho as saying the staff of the office will concentrate on “breaking through cultural barriers in order to get closer to the Chinese market, promoting better relations”.

The report says Mr Carvalho visited the northeastern Chinese city of Ningbo last week for an international meeting on Chinese economic engagement with the world beyond its borders, and met there representatives of Chinese trade associations and Chinese logistics companies with a view to drumming up more business for the port of Santos and more investment in the facility.

Of the goods unloaded at the port last year, US$10.34 billion worth or about 21 percent arrived from China, more than from any other country, O Globo says.
