Greater China source of 9/10ths of Brazilian bicycle imports

Official data indicate that 82.5 percent of the 75,971 bicycles imported by Brazil in the first eight months of this year were made in Mainland China and 6.2 percent in Taiwan, Agência Brasil reports.

The state-run news agency says the figures were derived by the Brazilian association of bicycle makers, Abraciclo, from data given by the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services.

The report quotes a written statement issued by Abraciclo as saying Brazil imported 3.6 percent more bicycles in the first eight months than in the corresponding period last year.

The statement says almost 500,000 bicycles were made in Brazil, 14.6 percent more than a year earlier.

It quotes Abraciclo Vice-president Cyro Gazola as attributing the growth in demand for bicycles in Brazil to more and better urban bicycle lanes, Agência Brasil says.
