The Mozambican government has said the country requires about US$3.2 billion for rehabilitation in central and northern regions severely damaged by Cyclone Idai and Cyclone Kenneth, Xinhua reports.
The Chinese government-run news agency quotes government spokeswoman Ana Comoana as saying: “The amount is meant to fund the reconstruction of social, productive and other essential sectors affected by the cyclones.”
Ms Comoana said the estimate was contained in a post-disaster assessment carried out by Mozambican government and some partners, to be presented to a conference of donors of aid, which will be held in the eastern Mozambican city of Beira this month.
She said Mozambique was ready to use its own resources if it failed to get all the money from abroad.
Her government has lowered its target rate for economic growth this year to 2.5 percent from 4.7 percent because of the cyclones, Xinhua says.
