Official envisages Angola emulating Macao in casino industry

An official of the Angolan Ministry of Tourism will advise his government to hasten the drafting of new rules for the Angolan gambling industry so it can emulate the casino sector in Macao, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes the official, Jorge Manuel Calado, as saying on Monday in Macao that Angolan casinos are failing to live up to their full potential.

Mr Calado said new rules could make gambling a lucrative source of tax revenue and a driver of economic development in Angola.

The report says he was speaking after taking a two-week course in Macao on the tourism and events industries, which was intended for people in lusophone countries.

Mr Calado learned a lot from Macau’s “high-level training” in the tourism sector, a challenge the African country is still struggling with, Lusa quotes him as saying.
