Portuguese, Mozambican presidents to attend Beijing meeting

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi will attend the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Co-operation in Beijing this week, Lusa reports.

In one report, the Portuguese news agency quotes a written statement issued by Mr Sousa’s staff as saying the president will arrive in China on Thursday and stay six days, visiting Beijing, Shanghai and Macao.

He will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

The statement says Mr Sousa “will have the opportunity to contact those responsible for the current dynamism of the bilateral relationship, namely cultural agents, sportspeople, entrepreneurs and investors, as well as visiting several sites illustrating the richness of Chinese culture and its historic relationship with Portugal.”

In a separate report, the news agency says Mr Nyusi arrived in China yesterday and will stay until Saturday.

The report says he will meet Mr Xi, representatives of Chinese companies and Mozambicans living in China.

Mr Nyusi is accompanied by Mozambican Foreign Minister José Pacheco, Transport and Communications Minister Carlos Mesquita and Agriculture and Food Security Minister Higino de Marrule, Lusa says.
