IMF raises forecasts of Chinese GDP growth in 2017, 2018

The International Monetary Fund now expects growth in gross domestic product in China this year and next to be faster than it thought previously, but has given a warning that increasing indebtedness imperils the Chinese economy, Agence France-Presse reports.

The French news agency quotes the IMF as saying in its latest World Economic Outlook report that it now forecasts GDP growth of 6.8 percent this year, having

forecast in July growth of 6.7 percent.

The IMF now forecasts GDP growth of 6.5 percent next year, having forecast previously growth of 6.4 percent.

The latest World Economic Outlook says the faster growth will mean greater debt in China in the long run, and urges the Chinese government to exert more effort to curb the expansion of credit, AFP says.

The annual rate of growth in Chinese GDP was 6.9 percent in the first half of this year.
