IMF chief to visit Angola for talks about $4.5 bln loan

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde will visit Angola from December 20 to 22 to discuss a US$4.5 billion IMF loan to the country, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes the Angolan Finance Ministry as saying the IMF will lend the money only if the Angolan legislature passes the government budget for next year when it votes on the budget bill next Friday.

The report says Ms Lagarde will meet Angolan President João Lourenço and the government’s economic team, as well as female leaders. In addition, she will attend several charitable events.

Angolan Finance Minister Archer Mangueira said last month that his country could borrow money more cheaply from the IMF than from the open market, Lusa says.
