Concert in Beijing starts festival of Portuguese culture

A concert in Beijing featuring the music of Portuguese guitarist Pedro Jóia and Chinese erhu player Duan Chao has opened the 2019 Portuguese Cultural Festival, the China News Service reports.

The news agency says the slogan of the festival is “40 Years, 20 Events”, because it presents 20 cultural events to celebrate 40 years since the People’s Republic of China and Portugal established diplomatic relations.

The report quotes Portuguese Ambassador to China José Augusto Duarte as saying the festival covers music, dance, cinema, literature and art.

Mr Duarte said events were being held in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Macao and other Chinese cities.

He said Portugal and China had rich cultures, and that the Portuguese and Chinese were eager to strengthen their friendship through cultural exchanges.

China will put on a series of cultural events in Portugal this year, the China News Service quotes the ambassador as saying.
