Portuguese egg tarts get Chinese in Argentina salivating

Portuguese egg tarts are proving popular among Chinese living in Argentina, Lusa reports, citing the founder of the Nataria Portuguesa bakery chain, Luís Infante da Câmara.

The Portuguese news agency quotes Mr Infante da Câmara saying the advent of the Nataria Portuguesa chain in Buenos Aires five months ago was announced on the website of the Chinese community in Argentina, and that orders have since been incessant.

The report says about 200,000 Chinese live in Argentina, most of them in Buenos Aires, and that many first heard about Portuguese egg tarts thanks to Macau, where they are a speciality.

It quotes Mr Infante da Câmara as saying: “They don’t buy just one, but dozens at a time.”

Mr Infante da Câmara invested over €600,000 (about US$680,500) in building a bakery in the province of Santa Fé which supplies about 12 outlets in Argentina, including two main shops, one of them in the Portuguese-owned Hotel Pestana Buenos Aires, Lusa says.
