Minister says Sino-Portuguese pork trade agreement struck

Portuguese Agriculture Minister Luís Capoulas Santos has said negotiations about allowing Portugal to export pork to China have ended in agreement, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes Mr Capoulas Santos as saying in Shanghai that Chinese Customs Minister Ni Yuefeng told him in a meeting on Monday that the paperwork could be done within the next few days.

The report says Mr Capoulas Santos was speaking after attending the China International Import Expo, where he met representatives of the Portuguese pork industry.

The minister said Portuguese exporters expect to start shipping pork to China this month, at the rate of 10,000 carcasses a week.

Talks about opening up the Chinese market for Portuguese grapes, apples and pears are still going on, Lusa quotes Mr Capoulas Santos as saying.
