Mainland reopens its embassy in São Tomé and Príncipe

The Chinese Embassy in São Tomé and Príncipe has reopened after the resumption of diplomatic ties, the government broadcaster CCTV reports.

Monday’s official ceremony attracted more than 200 officials and guests from the two nations, including Charge d’Affaires ad Interim Wang Wei and São Tomé and Príncipe Foreign Minister Urbino Botelho.

“The Government attaches importance to the development of ties with São Tomé and Príncipe, and is willing to deepen pragmatic co-operation with the country in various fields based on the One China principle,” Mr Wang was quoted as saying. “Within its capabilities, China is willing to support São Tomé and Príncipe in seeking economic and social development, improving its people’s livelihood and well-being, and strengthening its ability of self-sustainable development.”

Mr Botelho said his country would soon establish an embassy in the Mainland.
