Chinese contractor begins building Mozambique-Tanzania road

Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (Group) Co. Ltd of China has begun building a road north from Mozambique to Tanzania, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese state-run news agency quotes Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi as saying at the groundbreaking ceremony that construction of the road was a dream come true for Mozambicans and Tanzanians.

Mr Nyusi said the road would facilitate international trade and so help eradicate poverty.

The report says building the road will entail construction of three bridges.

It says the African Development Bank is paying the bill.

The road is expected to allow goods and people – including tourists – to move around more easily, so expanding the economy of the region it serves, Xinhua says.
