China to fund international highway system linking Guinea-Bissau and neighbouring states

China has pledged to fund the construction of an international highway system linking Guinea-Bissau to neighbouring countries, said the African nation’s Minister of Public Works, Construction and Urban Planning, Malam Banjai.

“A group of Chinese business people are already in the country to study the project,” Mr Banjai recently told Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua. The Minister was in China from July 28 to August 2.

The report did not specify the details of the scheme.

Mr Banjai added that a number of Chinese enterprises had said they were interested in investing in the African nation, particularly in the fisheries, tourism, trade, and industry sectors.

China’s Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau, Wang Hua, said earlier this month that the two nations would enhance co-operation on agriculture, education and fisheries.
