China, Cape Verde sign two new co-operation protocols

The Government of Cape Verde will take new measures to boost economic co-operation with China, said the African nation’s Minister of Economy and Employment, José da Silva Gonçalves, as quoted by Cape Verdean newspaper A Semana.

According to the media outlet, China and Cape Verde signed two new protocols at a meeting last week in Beijing. The gathering aimed to analyse the practical results – achieved so far – from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, an event held at the Johannesburg Summit in South Africa in December.

One of the protocols signed last week was between the China-Africa Development Fund and Cabo Verde TradeInvest. The protocol is set to help Cape Verde improve access to Chinese funds aimed at supporting development in Africa.

Cabo Verde TradeInvest is an agency recently created by the Cape Verde Government. The agency aims to promote investment in the African nation, as well as to boost the country’s exports.

The other protocol was signed between the Cape Verde Government and the Chinese group Huawei, and covers a project called “Safe Cities”. The aim is to install in Cape Verde’s main cities video surveillance cameras, as well as communication and control centres for the surveillance system.

China’s President Xi Jinping had announced at the Johannesburg Summit that China would offer US$60 billion to Africa to help fund new co-operation and development programmes across 10 sectors in the following three years.
