Brazil makes August 15 annual Chinese Immigration Day

President Michel Temer has signed legislation designating August 15 each year as Chinese Immigration Day in Brazil, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes Mr Temer as saying that instituting Chinese Immigration Day consolidates the Sino-Brazilian relationship, enhances exchanges between Chinese and Brazilians, and acknowledges the contribution of Chinese immigrants to Brazilian society.

The report quotes Chinese Charge d’Affaires in Brasilia Song Yang as saying the legislation marks an important point in the history of Sino-Brazilian exchanges, and shows how open Brazil is to the world outside.

Official records show Chinese have been migrating to Brazil since 1900, Xinhua says.
