Mozambican tax officials learning Putonghua

The Tax Authority of Mozambique is sending up to 80 of its staff on a three-month course to learn Putonghua so they can communicate better with Chinese businesspeople in Mozambique, the African Press Association (APA) reports.

The news agency quotes a senior official of the authority, Venancio Francisco, as saying the purpose is to improve the relationship between the taxman and Chinese taxpayers.

The report says the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo is putting on the Putonghua training course.

The course will eventually be offered to officials in other parts of Mozambique because China is now the biggest source of foreign investment in the country, the APA quotes Mr Francisco as saying.
