A Chinese-made refuse collection truck powered only by electricity has been put to work for the first time after receiving a license plate in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, CGTN reports.
The Chinese state-run international broadcaster says the eT8A truck, made by BYD Auto Co. Ltd, collects and compacts organic waste from Cadeg, Rio’s largest distribution centre for agriculture products.
The report quotes Clean Ambiental Chief Financial Officer Guilherme Almeida as saying his firm, Rio’s major waste disposal company, will replace its entire fleet of 40 refuse collection trucks with BYD electric vehicles.
Brazilian operators have ordered 200 eT8A refuse collection trucks, the last of which is due to be delivered by 2023, the report says.
Only China will have a bigger fleet of electric trucks than Brazil, helping the South American country’s major cities reduce pollution, CGTN quotes BYD director of marketing and sustainability in Brazil, Adalberto Maluf, as saying.
