Chinese company brings satellite TV to remote parts of Mozambique

The government in Mozambique says a Chinese project costing US$3.8 million will bring satellite television broadcasts to 500 villages there this year.

The Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Communications issued a written statement saying the Chinese company Startimes Mocambique is undertaking the project.

The ministry says one of the purposes is to make digital television broadcasts available in places such as government buildings, hospitals, schools and community centres in villages where broadcasts cannot be received at present.

Each of the villages has at least 150 households.

The project is part of a wider scheme announced in 2015 by Chinese President Xi Jinping to bring digital television to 10,000 villages in Africa, the Ministry of Transport and Communications says.
