Chinese invest US$8.69 bln in Portugal in a decade

Chinese have invested at least US$8.69 billion in Portugal since 2008, Bloomberg reports.

The news agency says the sum is the combined value of 15 investments, the biggest being the purchase by China Three Gorges Corp. of US$3.5 billion worth of shares in EDP – Energias de Portugal SA, a utility, in 2011.

The report says Chinese companies, either state-owned or private, have together invested at least US$255 billion in 30 European countries since 2008.

Chinese investments in Europe in the past decade were mainly in chemicals, conventional energy, property and mining, Bloomberg says.
