Cape Verde’s economy grew 5.8pct in first quarter 2016

Cape Verde’s economy expanded by 5.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2016, the nation’s statistics bureau announced on Thursday.

In the first quarter of 2015, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) had registered a 1.9-percent annual growth rate.

“This evolution is due mainly to the growth registered in… agriculture, hospitality and food and beverage [sector], public administration and subsidies’ net taxes,” Cape Verde’s National Statistics Institute said in a statement.

Local newspaper A Semana said the annual growth rate in national GDP registered in the first quarter this year was the highest since the fourth quarter 2013.
