The road authority in Mozambique has awarded a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corp. Ltd (CSCEC) the contract to repair a main road damaged by a storm, Notícias reports.
The Mozambican newspaper quotes the authority as saying the work is estimated to cost 1.1 billion meticais (US$17.8 million).
The report says the road leads west from the coastal city of Beira to the Zimbabwean border, crossing the provinces of Sofala and Manica.
The road was badly damaged by Cyclone Idai in March, Notícias says.
Soon after, a Portuguese newspaper, Público, reported that CSCEC made emergency repairs to the road, diverting it around a 250-metre cleft carved out by a river swollen by rain carried by the storm, thus allowing the road to be used for the transport of essential goods.
