China, Portugal to co-operate on water management

Portuguese Environment Minister João Matos Fernandes has said representatives of China and Portugal are due to sign this year an agreement to co-operate in managing water and riverside ecosystems, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency quotes Mr Fernandes as saying on the sidelines of the World Water Forum in Brasília that the agreement will cover technical and scientific co-operation among institutions of higher education and research, but that private companies may eventually give technical support to efforts to rehabilitate riverside ecosystems in China.

The report says the World Water Forum brings together officials from 150 countries and representatives of companies in the water business to discuss how to manage water resources sustainably.

The conference began on Monday and ends tomorrow, Lusa says.
