Chinese-led group starts construction of Brazilian port

A consortium headed by China Communications Construction Co. Ltd (CCCC) has started building a port in the northeastern Brazilian city of São Luís which is meant to increase capacity for shipping goods in and out of the surrounding region, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese state-run news agency says the group is investing about 800 million reais (US$243.8 million) in the port.

The report says CCCC has a 51 percent interest in the consortium, and that WPR Participações Ltda and Lyon Capital of Brazil have smaller stakes.

The construction work will take four years and could employ 4,000 people.

The port is designed to have the capacity to handle 10 million tonnes of cargo a year, 7 million tonnes of it grain, and to store 1.8 million cubic metres of oil products, Xinhua says.
