The authorities in Guinea Bissau intend to export to China most of the illegally felled logs of rare timber they seized a few years ago, Reuters reports.
The news agency quotes Guinea Bissau Director-General of Flora and Fauna Mamadu Camara as saying his country means to export 1,500 containers of logs confiscated between 2012 and 2014.
Mr Camara said the logs were expected to fetch €10.3 million (US$12.6 million).
He said 35 percent of the proceeds would be spent on taking an inventory of forest species, on monitoring forests and on replanting.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) authorities agreed to give Guinea Bissau 90 days to sell the logs after the imposition there of a ban on all exports of rare timber for the next three years.
