China ranked as Brazil’s largest beef buyer in May

China was the largest buyer of Brazilian beef in May, importing a total of 20,280 tonnes, worth US$84.3 million, said the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters (Abiec).

According to the association, the South American nation exported a total of 100,980 tonnes of beef globally last month, representing a year-on-year increase of 18.8 percent, online media Macauhub reported.

Beef exports for May generated revenue of US$398 million for Brazil, the report added.

The Brazilian Refrigeration Association (Abrafrigo) said in April that Brazil was expected to export more than 200,000 tonnes of beef to China in 2016.

From December 2012, Mainland China had imposed an embargo on beef from the South American nation. It followed a suspected case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy – more commonly known as ‘mad cow disease’ – in the Brazilian state of Paraná. The import ban was officially revoked in November 2014 and Mainland China began to buy Brazilian beef in June 2015.
