Expansion of teaching of Portuguese in Mainland China eyed

The Macao Polytechnic Institute and the Macau Portuguese School Foundation have jointly adopted a protocol for the expansion of the teaching of Portuguese into primary and secondary schools in Mainland China, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency says the foundation wishes to expand its Portuguese language instruction into Mainland Chinese schools and, with this end in mind, has made contact with the authorities on Hengqin, a Mainland Chinese island bordering Macao.

The protocol is meant to ensure the support of the Macao Polytechnic Institute in this endeavour.

The institute concentrates its own efforts on teaching Portuguese in Mainland Chinese universities, giving instruction to would-be teachers of the language, Lusa says.
