Chinese entrepreneurs hope to invest 10 bln euros in Portugal

A group of Chinese business people is planning to invest 10 billion euros (US$11.4 billion) in Portugal, the Shanghai Entrepreneur Association announced on Tuesday.

“Our association is composed of 2,000 of the strongest companies in China. Several large companies are looking for opportunities, and we are in contact with several Portuguese entities,” said the President of the association, Zheng Yonggang, as quoted by Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Negócios.

Mr Zheng added that two of the first targets of the association would be Portugal’s property market and its antiques market. “Later on, we want to invest in the fields of finance, sports, tourism and high technology,” said the businessman.

According to the report, one of the reasons the Chinese entrepreneurs were looking to invest in Portugal is that Portuguese people are very open to such approaches.

Portugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa, will meet this Wednesday with representatives from the Shanghai Entrepreneur Association. One of the topics to be discussed in the meeting would be investment in Portugal, Jornal de Negócios added.
