Cape Verde-China economic ties to strengthen: President Fonseca

The President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, on Saturday said he hoped co-operation between the African nation and China would increasingly focus on economic matters, finance and business.

“The China-Cape Verde co-operation sets an example and has contributed significantly to our development process,” Mr Fonseca said, as quoted by Cape Verdean newspaper A Semana.

The President was speaking at a ceremony marking the inauguration of the renovation work of the country’s Palace of the Presidency. The work has been funded and executed by China.

Mr Fonseca stressed that the co-operation between the two countries had already gone beyond an earlier focus on infrastructure development in Cape Verde. China has also sent medical teams to the country, and provided scholarships for Cape Verdeans to study in China, the President noted. He added the Asian country had also made contributions related to cultural matters; trade exchange; food supply; and support to the African nation’s military.

This week Cape Verde and China celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations.
