Chinese company to build new airport in Guinea-Bissau

The Guinea-Bissau Government and Chinese company China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) have signed a memorandum of understanding on construction of a new international airport for the African nation, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported. Other infrastructure projects are also mentioned in the memo.

Guinea-Bissau’s Director-General for the Promotion of Private Investment, Bruno Januad, said — as quoted by the media outlet ­­—the memo includes expansion work at the existing international airport.

According to Lusa, CMEC also plans to build a power transmission line in the Saltinho region, as well as a new harbour at Pikil for fishing vessels.

The agreement additionally covers the construction of a deep-water harbour in Buba, in the country’s south, as well as roads, bridges and social housing in the Guinean capital, Bissau.

No details were given about the financial value of the projects covered by the memorandum, Lusa said.

The Portuguese news agency also reported the signing of a protocol between the Guinea-Bissau Chamber of Commerce and the Portuguese-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It aims to enhance co-operation between the two entities regarding: professional training; the business environment; business equipment; and new technologies.

Guinea-Bissau has welcomed approximately 150 official and business representatives from China, and Portuguese-speaking Countries and places, to a meeting on economic and trade co-operation. It started on Saturday and ends on Monday, April 11.
