Chinese-built gas-fired power station in Angola comes online

The Chinese-built Soyo natural-gas-fired power station in the northwestern Angolan province of Zaire has begun generating electricity, Angolan oil and gas company Group Sonangol says.

Sonangol issued a written statement saying its Soyo power station was using 22MW of its capacity to supply the electricity needs of the city of Soyo.

The power station will begin putting electricity on the national grid in the next few months.

The US$1 billion, 750MW power station was built by China Machinery Engineering Corp. (CMEC).

The CMEC project includes the construction of a transmission line to Luanda, more than 400km from Soyo.
