Portugal may welcome 1 mln Chinese tourists a year, says ambassador to Beijing

Portugal’s Ambassador to China says 1 million Chinese tourists could visit the country annually, the Lusa news agency reports.

Ambassador Jorge Torres-Pereira said the ambitious target would be met it annual growth in arrivals reached 35 percent.

Some 183,000 Chinese tourists visited Portugal last year, triple the number of arrivals from three years ago.

He said today’s first direct flight between the China and Portugal was “important to maintain the dynamics of a bilateral relationship that is effectively expanding”. A direct air route meant Lisbon could better serve as a platform connecting China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, he added.
