The latest Global Innovation Index puts the Chinese economy among the 20 most innovative in the world, the Associated Press reports.
The index, compiled annually by Cornell University in United States, the INSEAD business school in Europe and the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation, ranks 126 economies according to 80 indicators of innovativeness.
The news agency says China rose to 17th place in the index this year from 22nd last year.
The report quotes World Intellectual Property Organisation Director-General Francis Gurry, as saying: “China’s rapid rise reflects a strategic direction set from the top leadership to developing world-class capacity in innovation and to moving the structural basis of the economy to more knowledge-intensive industries that rely on innovation to maintain competitive advantage.”
Portugal is in 32rd place in the latest index, Brazil in 64th place and Mozambique in 115th place, AP says.
