Agreement on Confucius Institute branch in Oporto signed

Representatives of the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China have signed an agreement to help set up a branch of the Confucius Institute at the University of Porto in the northern Portuguese city, the Nanfang Daily reports.

The newspaper, which serves the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, says the universities will co-operate in teaching the Chinese language, swap teachers and students, and arrange cultural exchanges.

The report says the Chinese Embassy in Lisbon and the University of Porto agreed last December to establish a branch of the Confucius Institute in Oporto.

The Guangdong and Oporto universities will make the new branch of the Confucius Institute a gateway for Sino-Portuguese exchanges in the field of languages, the Nanfang Daily quotes the secretary of the Chinese Communist Party committee at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Sui Guangjun, as saying.
