Annual rate of economic growth in Brazil 1 pct in Q2

Official figures indicate that the annual rate of growth in Brazilian gross domestic product was 1 percent in the second quarter of this year, Reuters reports.

The news agency says the Brazilian Economy Ministry now forecasts that if GDP keeps growing at the second-quarter rate, the economy will grow by 0.6 percent this year, having grown by 1.1 percent last year and the year before.

The report says the ministry regards the economic situation as more favourable today than it was a few months ago.

Official figures indicate that GDP was 0.4 percent bigger in the second quarter of this year than in the first, having been 0.1 percent smaller in the first quarter than the quarter before.

Sequential growth in fixed investment was 3.2 percent in the second quarter, growth in industrial production was 0.7 percent and growth in services was 0.3 percent.

But the sequential contraction in agricultural output was 0.4 percent and the contraction in government spending was 1 percent, Reuters says.
