BNU sees growth in business linked to Portuguese-speaking world

The business of Macau-based Portuguese lender Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) with clients related to Portuguese-speaking Countries registered a double-digit growth in 2016, Jornal Tribuna de Macau reports.

The newspaper reported the details after interviewing BNU Chief Executive Pedro Cardoso.

Mr Cardoso was quoted as saying the 2016 increase was less than 20 percent. The report says the bank recorded a 153-percent annual increase in business linked to Portuguese-speaking Countries the previous year.

“Still, [growth in 2016] is a very good growth, a lot higher than the average growth of the sector and of BNU,” Mr Cardoso was quoted as saying.

BNU is part of the Portuguese group Caixa Geral de Depósitos that operates in seven Portuguese-speaking Countries and is considered a “market leader” in five.

In 2015, BNU and the Bank of China Macau Branch signed a protocol designed to promote business between companies here and in Portuguese-speaking Countries. BNU opened its first Mainland branch in the Hengqin Free Trade Zone last month.
