Brazilian and Chinese officials are due to meet today to talk about Brazilian exports to China of meat, and of sugar produced by genetically modified sugarcane, Reuters reports.
The news agency quotes Brazilian Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina Dias as saying she will raise these matters when she meets officials of the Chinese customs service in Beijing.
“The sugar itself is not genetically modified, so we’re going to explain about the scientific process and explain why sugar should not be considered by science as a GM product,” Ms Dias is quoted as saying.
She said 79 Brazilian slaughterhouses wished to export beef, pork, poultry flesh and other meat to China, but that Chinese officials had done the necessary inspections of only 10.
“One thing we’re going to discuss is if it’s necessary to visit all plants, or if they can select a sample,” Reuters quotes Ms Dias as saying.
