Brazilian, Chinese presidents tackle food surcharge issue

Brazilian President Michel Temer has said Chinese President Xi Jinping will consider reducing or eliminating the surcharge China levies on some farm products it imports from Brazil, O Globo reports.

The Brazilian newspaper quotes Mr Temer as saying Mr Xi said so when they met on the sidelines of the summit meeting of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) bloc, held in South Africa last week.

“I basically raised the issue of the surcharge on sugar and poultry,” Mr Temer is quoted as saying.

He said Mr Xi promised to look into the levies.

O Globo also quotes the Brazilian president as saying his country is eager to export more beef and pork to China, a big market for meat produced abroad.
