Brazilian Foreign Ministry sets up China department

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has set up a department of Chinese affairs and a department of US affairs, the Global Times reports, citing an official announcement.

The Chinese state-run newspaper says the announcement discloses that the new departments were created by the restructuring of the ministry since President Jair Bolsonaro took office.

The report says the advent of a department of Chinese affairs reflects the emphasis the new Brazilian government puts on Sino-Brazilian relations.

Mr Bolsonaro told an envoy sent by Chinese President Xi Jinping this month, Ji Bingxuan, that his government attached great importance to Sino-Brazilian co-operation and was willing to enhance the Sino-Brazilian relationship.
