Brazilian orange juice exporters press China to open up

Representatives of the Brazilian Association of Citrus Juice Exporters, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and the Chinese authorities are holding talks about increasing exports of orange juice to China, Macauhub reports.

The news website quotes the association as saying it wants changes in rules about the temperature of the juice it ships, or to build facilities at Chinese ports for unloading juice in bulk.

The report says that how much duty China levies on imports of Brazilian orange juice depends on how cold the juice is, which adds at least 30 percent to the import price.

It quotes an official of the association, Ibiapaba Netto, as saying the duty makes Brazilian orange juice less competitive in the Chinese market than elsewhere.

With the support of the Brazilian government, the association will start in China an advertising campaign for Brazilian orange juice, Macauhub quotes Mr Netto as saying.
