The news agency, citing figures given by the Brazilian statistics agency, says retail sales were 1 percent higher in April than the month before, rising at a faster rate than the median forecast of 0.6 percent in a poll of economists.
The report says retail sales were 0.6 percent higher greater in April than a year earlier, growing at a faster rate than the median forecast of 0.55 percent.
An economist of the statistics agency, Isabella Nunes, thinks the sales figures are a sign that the momentum of the recovery of the Brazilian economy from a deep recession is increasing, Reuters says.
