Brazilian retail sales rise faster than expected in April

Official data indicate that retail sales in Brazil grew more swiftly than expected in April, Reuters reports.

The news agency, citing figures given by the Brazilian statistics agency, says retail sales were 1 percent higher in April than the month before, rising at a faster rate than the median forecast of 0.6 percent in a poll of economists.

The report says retail sales were 0.6 percent higher greater in April than a year earlier, growing at a faster rate than the median forecast of 0.55 percent.

An economist of the statistics agency, Isabella Nunes, thinks the sales figures are a sign that the momentum of the recovery of the Brazilian economy from a deep recession is increasing, Reuters says.
