Brazilian soybean farms invest in meeting Chinese demand

Mosaic Co. and Yara International ASA expect to supply Brazilian soybean farms with more fertiliser this year than ever before, Bloomberg reports.

The news agency quotes a Mosaic executive, Eduardo Monteiro, as saying his company will deliver 36.5 million tonnes of fertiliser this year, 2.8 percent more than last year.

Mr Monteiro said soybean farmers had already bought four-fifths of the fertiliser they need for their next crop, even though planting begins only in September.

The report quotes a Yara executive, Cleiton Vargas, as saying he expects the area of Brazil given over to soybeans to expand by 2.5 percent in the coming growing season as farmers plant land they now use for pasture or sugar cane.

Brazilian soybeans have been replacing US soybeans in the Chinese market since the Sino-US trade war began, Bloomberg says.
