Brazilian winemakers eye expansion of their market in China

Brazilian winemakers and the Brazilian government are putting their heads together to come up with a strategy for taking a larger share of the Chinese market for sparkling wines and grape juice, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes an executive of the Brazilian Wine Institute, Diego Bertolini, as saying Brazil has distinct products for the Chinese palate, such as a sparkling muscatel, which is aromatic, with 8 percent alcohol content and greater residual grape sugar.

“In Asia, our market is more directed at China, where we take part in four annual fairs, initially seeking distributors in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou,” Mr Bertolini said.

Brazilian winemakers and the Brazilian state-run export promotion agency intend to put more Brazilian wine and juice up for sale in the Hema chain of bricks-and-mortar and online supermarkets run by Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Xinhua says.
