China congratulates Brazilian president-elect on his victory

China has congratulated Jair Bolsonaro on winning the Brazilian presidential election on Sunday, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang as saying China wishes Brazil well in its development.

“China always attaches great importance to its relations with Brazil from a strategic height and long-term perspective, and is willing to work with Brazil to safeguard and develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries,” Mr Lu said.

He said the Sino-Brazilian relationship had borne fruit in many fields over the years, and that everybody in both countries agreed on the need to keep developing the relationship.

Mr Bolsonaro, a lawmaker belonging to the Social Liberal Party, will begin a four-year term as president on 1 January.
