China-funded lodgings for doctors in Mozambique completed year-end

The construction of some lodgings for Mozambican and Chinese doctors is due to be completed in a year’s time in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, local newspaper Notícias reported on Tuesday.

The US$4.9-million project is being funded by China as a result of co-operation between the two countries, the media outlet said.

Mozambique’s Health Minister Nazira Abdula and China’s Ambassador to the African nation, Su Jian, officially launched the construction. It is being carried out by China’s Nantong Construction Group.

Ms Abdula said – as quoted by Notícias – the new building would cut accommodation costs paid by such medical professionals.

The structure will have seven floors and 32 apartments and will be next to Maputo Central Hospital’s Emergency Department, according to the news report.

Mr Su said – as quoted by the newspaper – China’s donation is related to the Asian nation’s co-operation ties with Portuguese-speaking Countries. He noted that China is also building a paediatrics unit at a hospital in Sofala in Mozambique, and has been offering a number of scholarships to Mozambicans studying medicine-related programmes in China.

Mr Su also said a Macao delegation is due to visit Mozambique in order to help the country develop traditional medicines.
