China funds Cape Verdean e-governance project to tune of US$15mln

Cape Verde signed a financing deal with Mainland China this week that would see Beijing provide US$15 million to help implement the second phase of an e-governance project.

Cape Verde broadcaster RTC reports that US$13 million will be provided as a concessional loan and US$2 million in donations.

The e-governance project aims to connect most of the islands in the archipelago with fibre optic cabling and telecommunications equipment.

The Inforpress news agency quotes Manuel Ney Cardoso, the director of Political Affairs and Cooperation, as saying the first phase of the project improved the efficiency of public bodies. Beijing also financed the project’s first stage.

He added the financing deal has deepened co-operation and the relationship between both countries.
