Construction has started on the Caculo Cabaça hydroelectric power station in Dondo in Angola’s Cuanza Norte Province, Xinhua reports.

China Gezhouba Group Co. Ltd is building the US$4.5-billion power station, which will be the biggest of its type in Angola and the largest hydroelectric power station built by a Chinese firm in Africa.

The report from the Chinese government-run news agency says the power station will have the capacity to generate 2,172MW or more than of Angola’s current requirements.

Construction work is expected to take 80 months and employ almost 10,000 people when in full swing. China Gezhouba is contracted to operate and maintain the power station for four years and to train the managers and technicians that will run it, Xinhua says.
