China imports of Brazilian pork soar in Q1

Official figures indicate that Brazil exported 39,175 tonnes of pork to China in the first quarter of this year, 151.6 percent more than a year earlier, the Global Times reports.

The Chinese state-owned newspaper, citing data given by the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, says the jump in first-quarter exports of Brazilian pork to China made up for the drop in pork exports to Russia, which banned imports of Brazilian pork products last December.

Chinese imports of Brazilian pork may grow now China has imposed a tariff of 25 percent on imports of US pork, the report says.

The Global Times quotes Brazilian Animal Protein Association Chairman Francisco Turra as saying: “We expect that exports to China will grow dramatically.”
