China promises Cabo Verde 140 million yuan in aid

China has promised to give Cabo Verde 140 million yuan (US$20 million) in official development assistance, the Cabo Verde government says.

A written statement posted on the government website says Chinese President Xi Jinping made the promise when he met Cabo Verde Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva in Beijing last week. Mr Silva was attending the Sino-African summit there.

Cabo Verde and China will look for the best ways to co-operate more in economic matters, such as the maritime special economic zone around the island of São Vicente, the second phase of the Safe City project and building of an international conference centre in Praia, the Cabo Verde government says.

Separately, the Chinese state-run news agency, Xinhua, reports that Mr Xi told Mr Correia e Silva that China is willing to take measures to increase Sino-Cabo Verde co-operation in infrastructure and the maritime economy.
